Abhinandana

Leos of Leo Club of Colombo Millennium got together at the very beginning of the Leoistic year 22/23, and organized a religious program around Athurugiriya area.

This project was conducted with the participation of a minimum number of Leos of the club because of travelling difficulties. Public transportation had been limited all around Sri Lanka by that time due to the fuel crisis prevailing in the country. The activity was organized with a little effort to symbolize the importance of obtaining blessings from our respective religions before commencing a new task.

Power of One

As per the request made by DG Lion Shyana, to start the new Leoistic year with a project, We Leo Club of Colombo Millennium of District 306 A1, completed a project in Kottawa area.

We donated cool drinks to people for waiting in queues to pump their vehicle. People suffocate at queues due to the prevailing fuel storage in Sri Lanka.

We tried to give them a little break by providing them refreshments during difficult time.

It's notable that, within 24 hours the required fund was contributed by the generous members of our club

Athwela 3.0

The news about the difficulties facing by low-income families to find their next meal is all over media these days. It has been reported that over 6 million people are uncertain about their next meal. (Source: Time of India). This news lead us, Leos to do something towards the needy families in Sri Lanka to provide for few meals.

With this thought in mind, Leos of Colombo Millennium circulated their project idea to its members as well as to the general public both through social media and by word of mouth. With a very short period of time, the Leos could collect an amount near to LKR 35,000 /= from donations received from very generous people around the club. Since both club club members and outsiders came forward to donate for the project, the challenge of raising funds could be overcome easily.

Leos also faced many difficulties to travel as there is a fuel crisis, and so the public transportation has been cut short. Therefore a few of Leos living near Homagama and Athurugiriya town areas got together to launch the project to help the poor with funds they collected.

They met on two days in two areas (Homagama and Athurugiriya) to bought essential groceries and to distribute them to selected people. Leos focused the people earning a daily income to survive and now has faced difficulties in doing so. Therefore the Leos decided to distribute the packs of groceries to people who were working beside roads such as shoe cobblers, jack fruit sellers, etc.

The types and quantities of groceries that were in each food pack were as follows:

Rice 4kg

Dhal 1kg

Big Onion 1kg

Sugar 1 kg

Potatoes 1 kg

Coconut Oil 750ml (1 Bottle)

Marmite 1 bottle

Coconut 1

We were able to distribute 10 packs of food to needy families and individuals in a period of two days - on 1st of July and on 2nd of July

The goal of this initiative is to give the people the direction they need to do this task.

Due to the frequent travel problems in the country, it was planned to host the program as a webinar. The speakers for the event were chosen from the Leo District, in accordance with the sessions' pre-planned material.

Three guest speakers were invited to the two-hour program. Leo Malmi Kuruppu, Vice District President of Leo District 306 A1, presented a good introduction to the session and the Leo movement during the first session. Exhibita

An effective way for any society or economy to remain young and sustainable is through youth’s involvement in business and society. Human beings and young people in particular are more likely to embark on business venture in places that are poorer or with high rates of unemployment than in places that are richer and with low rates of unemployment if thought the right values and directed out of crimes and laziness . Youth Entrepreneurship is a medium or mechanism of minds opening of individuals and societies. It add-value to Creativity and Innovation which focuses on investing in human capital by enhancing and fostering the can-do attitude. It is not only business start-ups, the profit and social enterprise sectors, the human capital optimization and the quality of life.

Entrepreneurship is ‘an individual’s ability to turn Ideas into Action’ and its value to society cannot be underestimated or dismissed.

We identified that in the Leo movement there are some young entrepreneurs that have capacity and have already worked to build up their own brands and names. We, Leo Club of Colombo Millennium thought to open up a platform for them to enhance their abilities.

Annual outing

All the ‘Millennium’ hearts were buzzing with the excitement of going on the annual club trip of 2022. From the very first day of preparations, it was known that we’d be travelling to a very scenic place and would have loads of fun. And now looking back, it was much better than the expectations we had. Whoever joined would call it the best trip they’ve ever gone owing to the fun and joy we all shared and the beautiful memories we made. All thanks to a very reliable organizing committee, the preparations went as smooth as they possibly could go. A bus for travelling was booked, the itinerary was planned, the food and beverages were collected whereas others worked on the registrations and finances. And finally, the day came. It was very early morning on September 10th when the journey started from Panadura, but nobody seemed weary or heavy-eyed as we were all looking forward to this with gleaming hearts.

After hours of travel, we took a brief stop at Parawi Thota beside a beautiful lake, where we had our breakfast. The lake was beautiful and attractive indeed, considering how the boys couldn’t resist it and jumped right into the water. The girls were chatting endlessly like chirping birds in the morning, gossiping, laughing and of course, clicking a million and

one photos. And then, it was time to complete the rest of the journey. After about another hour or so, we were able to reach our destination in Ratnapura. A beautiful bungalow amongst the green, surrounded by countless tea estates was our destination. The Leos felt grateful for Lion Sunil Dharmaratna for allowing us to visit his bungalow for this trip. As breath-taking as it was, the climb to the place was quite rough. Well, as the saying goes, ‘good things are surely appreciated much more when the path is rough’. However exhausting the journey was, looking around at the picturesque view, our weariness vanished in seconds as if the soft breeze blowing through took it from us.

We were greeted with the hospitality of the individuals taking care of the place, who prepared lunch for us and kindly helped us to settle for the coming time that we’d be spending there. One of the key highlights of the day came afterwards, which was taking a dip in a natural pool owned by the land. As if the water was calling our names, the Leos didn’t think twice before jumping into the water. Some were enjoying the view, some were enjoying the cold water, some were playing water games, some were taking photos, and others were having fun watching all the drama. After a fun bath and a delicious lunch, it was time to wind down and rest a little. And some decided to gather around a huge table to play cards, whereas others were chit chatting and reminiscing old memories.

As the dark was falling, we did one of the most beautiful things ever, which was flying sky lanterns. The Leos got together, lit three lanterns one by one and sent it to the sky, with prayers and wishes for a prosperous and a successful future. Watching them drifting away slowly until finally disappearing was quite intimate and very calming. Afterwards, we had a fun night, chatting, singing, dancing and of course, enjoying our dinner. There were so many big and small conversations, and the silent night was filled with the laughters and exciting voices chatting away.

As the sun was rising the next morning, we did feel slightly heavy at our hearts knowing that it was the day that we had to part ways and go home. Nevertheless, we decided to have the maximum out of the remaining hours we had left. After a heart-filling breakfast, the girls decided to cook the lunch by themselves. After packing our delicious lunch ‘made with love’ and the rest of our belongings, it was time to say goodbye to the place that hosted us for over a day and also, the individuals who tried their best to make our stay comfortable and convenient. As we were climbing down back to our bus, our hearts were full and contented. But that wasn’t the end to the annual outing of the club because, like children of the water god, our Leos are always attracted to wherever there was water, just like the place we stopped for lunch. This was the same place at which the breakfast was taken the previous day and the boys and girls, both couldn’t resist taking a dip in the refreshing water. After having fun in the water and having our lunch, it was finally the time to go home. The journey back to

home felt heavy to our hearts as it was a bit saddening to end such a fabulous time together, but the fond memories made and the happiness that filled our hearts were more than enough evidence to say that the annual outing of the Leo Club of Colombo Millennium was indeed a success. And the moments spent and the sweet memories will be talked about for many more years to come. Maybe for the rest of our lives?

Donation of Love

The first phase of the project was a blood donation campaign and registrations for eye and tissue donation also took place. We contacted the blood bank through the National Hospital in Colombo and informed them about our campaign and got the necessary guidelines. The campaign was held at the Susilarama temple in Malabe on the 27th of August 2022, from 9.00 am to 3.00 pm. The head priest of the Susilarama temple was pleased to support such a great cause and gave us the permission to use the temple for the blood donation campaign. On the day prior to the event our club members visited the temple to clean and organize the setup. The blood donation campaign began the next day under the guidance of the staff from the blood bank and was held in accordance with the rules and guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health. A total of 98 people donated blood and around 75 to 80 people registered themselves for the eye and tissue donation.

The second phase of the project consisted of a diabetic checkup, blood pressure monitoring, eye checkup and distribution of spectacles, which were all conducted free of charge. This took place on the 3rd of September 2022 from 8.00 am to 12.30 pm at Avon Lanka Holdings, Malabe. The venue was given free of charge. The members of our Leo club got to together and cleaned the premises and got everything ready on time to start the campaign. The Lions hospital provided spectacles and a doctor from the hospital with a team of hospital staff also visited. The transport cost was borne by the Leo club of Colombo Millennium. A bus was arranged for the hospital staff members to arrive at the venue. The hospital team arrived at 8.30 am and after they got ready we started the campaign followed by the registration of participants, the participants were also able to register themselves for body tissue and organ donation. Eye, diabetes and blood pressure checkups were conducted by the staff from the Lions hospital in Panadura. Refreshments were given to the participants and the hospital staff. Lions from our parent club also visited the campaign. Media Sponsorship was provided for both phases by Shradda TV and Siyatha TV. The first and second phase of the Donation of love project was a great success and it benefited over 500 people.

The third phase involved providing awareness to the general public. We designed creative flyers and distributed them among the school children in the hopes of helping them get a better understanding on the importance of eye health, what foods assist healthy vision and common eye problems and tips for eye health. The target group was around 300 children from grade 6 to A/L’s.

Platinum sponsorship of the event was given by Aitkens Spence elevators. Also Leo Rashmi Boragolla, Leo Lion Kasun Sampath and Leo Vihanga sponsored for the project.

Rathmalgahawewa Material Donation Project

Rathmalgahawewa, Anuradhapura is an area where majority of people are low-income earners. The children of the families that reside in the Rathmalgahawewa area are receiving education despite very substandard facilities, according to information our parent lion club got. We chose to accept the Lions Club's request to join them and do all we could to assist these children. Because it not only enhances the well-being of children and families, but also interrupts the cycles of poverty and inequality and result in happier, healthier communities.

We first chose to seek for a donor for our initiative in order to purchase materials. In to raise money for the project, Lion Chaminda Hindurangala assisted us by sourcing a donor, MMBL Money Transfer Pvt Ltd.

Thereby, for this project, the Lions Club of Colombo Millennium collaborates with MMBL Money Transfer Pvt Ltd. We, the Leos of the Colombo Millennium Leo Club, spent 9,360/= on books, and the Lions Club of Colombo Millennium and MMBL Money Transfer Pvt. Ltd. donated 287,240/= for materials like books, school bags and gifts for teachers.

On the project date, Leos arrived in Anuradhapura early in the morning, and at first, they worshipped sacred religious places in Anuradhapura. Then they led the way to the Rathmalgahawewa area at around 11 a.m., since we planned to start the event around 1:00 p.m. Then the members of the Lion Club arrived in Aloka Pabbatharamaya, Rathmalgahawewa. There are about 110 kids studying in Sunday school conducted by Aloka Pabbatharamaya, who are from families of low-income earners in Rathmalgahawewa's rural area. Those children are facing many difficulties when they are doing their studies, as they do not have the required learning materials to continue their studies. Due to that, they tend to stop their education and get jobs. This scenario decreases the literacy level of the children living in those areas.

Both the parents and children got together at the premises. Then, Leos and Lions, distributed the material for children and arranged gifts for teachers. We began to realize that the satisfaction on their faces at that time was above the value of anything in the world, and it inspired us to engage in more comparable activities throughout our journey as Leos. At the end of the ceremony, the chief monk of Aloka Pabbatharamaya complimented our activity and inspired us to carry out more of this type of humanitarian efforts.

Finally, we were able to take first place in the closing ceremony of the tree plantation megaclub twinning project for the best project video presentation.

Non Inundatio

September was kind of a rainy season, and for Rathnapura, a small rain is sufficient to get it flooded. The annual outing of the Leo Club of Colombo Millennium was planned during this time to Rathnapura, and it was a bit rainy.

After we reached Rathnapura, we observed that the drainage system of the area near Rathnapura Town was blocked, and due to that, water passage through it was interrupted.

Leos quickly got ready, cleaned those drainages, and made the water flow uninterrupted.

Graveyard

Halloween magic is a kind that scares you in a good way. It is the one day that anyone (adults or kids) can dress up the way they like without any judgment. A fantasy and reality blur.

Leo Club of Colombo Millennium organized ‘Graveyard 2022’ Halloween Party at the Lions activity center on the 30th of October from 4pm to 10pm to deliver a unique night full of fun and dancing. The event was made special by welcoming all Leos across Sri Lanka to attend the event. With the intention of giving a glimpse of the Leo movement to the public, the event welcomed non Leos as well.

Careful

You pick up a newspaper and you will find at least one or two news about road accidents daily. They cause loss of life as well as material. People need to be more careful when on the road, no matter which mode of transport you are from. Even the ones on foot are not safe because of the rise in these incidences. Every day people witness accidents in the news, from relatives and even with their own eyes.

We need to prevent road accidents to decrease the death rate. Every year thousands of people lose their lives to road accidents. Children must be taught from an early age about traffic rules. They must be taught the value of life and how they can safeguard it.

Moreover, the government must pass more stringent laws for people who disobey traffic rules. They must fine people heavily or take strict action when found guilty of breaking these laws irrespective of gender.

Similarly, parents must set an example for the younger ones by not using phones while driving. Also, they must always wear their helmets and seatbelts to avoid the chances of an accident.

As Leos, youth of the society, we thought of doing a video series to convey the message of accident prevention and share it through social media platforms.

We choose to shoot them in Arcade premises, Colombo 07 and edited them accordingly. Usually, on most occasions drivers are always informed, but we thought to address and aim pedestrians in our video series.

We chose to share the videos through social media platforms because nowadays most of the people more time on social media than television and newspapers.

Thereby we thought it would be more affective if we share videos through social media.

"Remain patient and give all your respect to our beloved seniors; they have earned their dignity through their lifetimes.”

Leos of the club joined hands together with the public library

in Colombo to do some service for elder citizens who live alone without their families.

First, we contacted few elder's homes through the contacts given from employees of HNB Finance PLC - Kirulapona and Kaduwela Branches and collected some information about senior citizens who are able to do hand crafts. As per the request we made they made some fancy earrings and spoons using coconut shells with the raw materials they have.

After the discussions we had with Public Library, Colombo they agreed to give a chance to sell those items along with the other products at the Salpila Exhibition which is annually organized by Public Library of Colombo. The main objective of the stall was to provide the capital earned to the elders involved to create an income source which can be continued by the elders, considering the challenging situation of the country. This project was carried out to to develop the lifestyle of the senior citizens.

Furthermore, Leos of Colombo Millennium invited a doctor (Dr. Saman Weerawansha) to carry out a mentoring session to motivate the elders and readers of Public Library about Mental health who were involved with the project.

The project was completed successfully upon creating a marketplace for the elders. The stalls included a large variety of handmade items such as coconut shell crafts (eg. spoons), handmade earrings, various colorful artworks and much more items. With the help of employees of HNB Finance Kaduwela and Kirulapona branches we were able to contact few buyers (entrepreneurs) for their handmade products. By showcasing these products at the stalls, the elders identified that they could sell their own products as a constant source of income while the mentoring session provided the necessary motivation and confidence within these elders proving that age does not restrict their earnings, hence developing their lifestyle and creating a better, more independent future for the elders.

Expenses for this project were donated from Leo Ramindu.

Bliss'22

Females are the most powerful and gorgeous creatures in the whole world. She is multi-talented, and they are the real architects of society. In the modern world, most women become busier and hold more responsibilities when they grow up than before. Thereby, they didn't have much time to take care of themselves. Their careers and responsibilities within the family make her life busier.

The Leo Club of Colombo Millennium joined hands with WIE (Women in Engineering), Winnipeg, Canada to give them a little break from their busy lives. First, we talked with the club treasurer of WIE, Winnipeg who also is a friend of Leo Thilini and we agreed to do the same project parallelly in Canada and in Sri Lanka.

Then we shared a google form which contains certain questions regarding mental health. After we collected responses, we request them to send us any artistic creation they made during their free time. From that we expected to give them a little free time, after a busy schedule in their lives. Some have send us some paintings, some have send captures of their cooking and their leisure time activities. We did not forget to share their creations through social media.

Finally, after having a vote online, we offered them a little gift, to appreciate their talent. Gifts were sponsored by WIE, Winnipeg, Canada.

Although it is a small effort, we hope it will be a big relief for the women who does not have much time to enjoy themselves. Also, by this we send the message to all the working women to be relaxed at least for an hour a week.

Blossoming Minds 3.0 - Phase I

On the day of the project, as planned, our Leos went to the school beforehand and arranged the hall in which the session was to be conducted and also, prepared the relevant equipment like microphones. They also, together with the help of the school staff, arranged the chairs for the seating for children in the hall.

Our resource person for the session was Doctor Saman Weerawansa, who’s a professional in the field of mental health, a past director of Sri Lanka Foundation Institute and a current advisor in the Ministry of Education.

As soon as he was present at the venue, the session was begun with the presence of about 150 students. As a professional, he conducted a very engaging session for the students by including many interactive activities in it.

The session was concluded and the academic staff of the school was highly contented with the program and were confident about its impact on the participant students. The students’ faces were proof for how satisfied the program was and how much they enjoyed as well as learned from the program.

A hearty token of gratitude was given Dr. Saman Weerawansa for attending the program without a second thought and carrying out a very successful program with the students.

With many positive feedback from the students as well as the teachers from the school, the event concluded on a successful note, hoping to conduct an even better program for the next session.

Colourful Learning 2.0

The same rights and protection as other children are due to all children, including those with disabilities. Any child who has a disability should be regarded as a child in need as well. A child may be labeled impaired if they have severe difficulties with their ability to communicate, comprehend, see, hear, or move around.

Colombo Millennium Leos speculated that by giving those kids a new tool for comprehension and communication, they could be provided assistance. In addition, we were excited about having a good time with them for a change. They were engaged in activities that would help them function better and to enhance their skills.

Assimilation 2.0 Phase 2

Although there are several opportunities to return the favor to your society, being a Leo requires a great deal more than service. Joining a multinational clan of young people working to improve the world through Leo clubs will help you grow as a person as well as a leader. The purpose of this effort is to provide people with the guidance they require to do this endeavor.

An orientation session was held in middle of the leoistic year 2022/2023 to accomplish the goal of raising the standard of leoism. Due to crisis situation in country, it was planned to host the program as a webinar and Phase 2 of Assimilation 2.0 was a two-day program. The speakers for the event were chosen from the Leo District, in accordance with the sessions' pre-planned material.

"Colombo Millennium 'පැදුර'"

We decided to hold a gathering called "Colombo Millennium 'පැදුර'" at Leo Ramindu’s house place in response to his suggestion. We organized a karaoke night, which gave Leos a chance to show off their skills and have some fun. We invited the District Council to witness our wonderful moment.

We also welcomed all of our club's past presidents who hold various higher roles in Leo Multiple District Council 306 and Leo District 306 A1.

It began after all of the Leos arrived. As we mentioned a dress code, they wore Sarongs and Lungi for the occasion. First, we invited all previous presidents to share their thoughts with us. It was an unforgettable experience, and it's fascinating to hear stories about their Leo journey as well as we could learn some important things that will help us throughout our Leo movement. As per our invitation, we had visited Leos from the Leo Club of Moratuwa and the Leo Club of Moratuwa—Ratmalana. They shared their thoughts while wishing us great success.

Then we cut a cake to celebrate the 5th anniversary, and we shared it. Then we had drinks and popcorn while singing.

It was an unforgettable night for Colombo Millennium Leos, which enriches our bond and motivates us to remain in the Leo Movement.

They were provided with an informative leaflet with guidelines to grow their own vegetables and some were provided with seeds,

The third phase of the project was conducted jointly with Colombo Public Library. We, the Leos planted and treated vegetables in a land belong to the Public Library and the harvest was donated to an Elder's home. At the time of donating the vegetables, they were provided a large encouragement to grow their vegetable crops in their land. The leaflet which includes guidelines to make a vegetable garden also was given.

From the Dark

Under drugs you do not find yourself, but only your shadow. -Konstantin Wecker, German Poet-

Nowadays, drugs have become a severe problem in society, as it is expanding rapidly targeting the young generation of the country. Although numerous institutions have launched various programs across the country, we have decided to convey this message to them in a different method because there is no shortage of it. Thereby, we planned a street drama with a message which conveys the society about the effects of drugs on youth.

Drug abuse can be considered a major cause of many sexual problems. Accordingly, the aim of the second phase was to educate the people who have been addicted to drugs, about sexual health.

Pannaraya

This project's primary goal is to reduce inequalities among schoolgirls and accustom them to a common lifestyle by providing their necessities. Also, to inform a group of young people about possible future professional and educational paths, leave a lasting impression about acceptance despite diversity, and give them access to essential resources.

Eco Planet

This project has been carried out to investigate the usage of HHO gas to improve the performance of vehicle engines. The HHO unit was partnered effectively with the extant vehicle engine systems. The thermal efficiency was increased, and the fuel consumption was reduced as a result of this novel arrangement. When considering the emissions, the concentration of NOx, CO and HC gases are significantly reduced in the presence of HHO in the system.

Food Safety With you

Food safety refers to the conditions and practices that preserve the quality of the food to prevent contamination and foodborne illness. Under the theme of Food Safety, we planned to

do a webinar via Google Meet with a resource person because we can convey our idea perfectly in that way. At the end of the webinar, we planned a photographic competition and decided to give a gift to the winner with the most photogenic capture of the preserved food.

Falling Stars

Endemic species are indigenous to a geographical region and hence have area restrictedness. But due to some human activities, these epidemic species are threatened. But most of the people lack the knowledge and due to that their lives are threatened. We, Leos of Colombo Millennium thought to give some knowledge for students who are going to deal with the nature in the future. We did a research and organized a field trip to give them some knowledge in an attractive way.
